Founded in the early 1850s and named after railroad engineer James P. Kirkwood, the city was one of the first planned suburbs west of the Mississippi. The Kirkwood Station, built in 1893 in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, remains a landmark and a functioning Amtrak stop.
